Thanks for the assurance. At least I won't be the only one stranded. :-)
Finally, found it: some past posts that hint at the specialness of the hose, but don't give much detail, unfortunately:
A recent post (08/18/2005):
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9000/index.html?bID=215988
An older post (02/03/2002):
http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/9000/index.html?bID=101618
which led to the Townsend web site, Trionic documentation:
Technical Documents -> Engine -> Trionic -> page 2 -> page 3 -> page 4
(direct link to page 4 is below)
which contains this enigmatic passage:
"The MAP sensor is in communication with the intake manifold via a hose, the design of which is carefully adapted to ensure that pressure information is transferred correctly. The length of the hose, its positioning, the quality of the material it is made of and other factors are decisive for ensuring correct pressure measurement."
All I can say is, the factory length of the hose (which I made sure to copy) seems a bit short. It looks like it could use a little more slack, maybe half an inch more.
