I suspect it may be the fuel pump. The car started and ran on residual fuel pressure, but no more. I had this happen this summer, which is why I came up with the checklist below. If the fuel pump doesn't run when you wire it on, that's it.
One failure mode of the fuel pump is to develop and dead spot in the motor's commutator. It's no big deal when the motor is running, because momentum carries over that spot. But if it stops on the dead spot when you shut the car off, the motor won't run when you go to start. Some folks have had luck hitting the motor - actually, I'd hit the bottom of the gas tank, because the pump sits on the bottom of the tank. I've never been big on hitting plastic containers filled with fuel, but that's me.
