Should have a two pin connector on the sender; if you have one with an exposed single connector, you may have gotten the dashboard temp gauge sender instead. Think it's listed for $28 in the Engine Electrical section- http://www.eeuroparts.com/productdetail.aspx?searchResults=1&code=6193
Does yours look like the picture shown?


If you fail the inspection, you could get a ticket if you get stopped, no extensions; you can also get a waiver if you spend a certain amount of money towards getting it fixed and it still doesn't pass, but I don't think you want to deal with that, not sure what the limit is now but it's likely pretty high-

Current limits for 93 vehicles are
HC 0.80 lim
CO 15 lim
NOx 2.0 lim

Elevated NOx could be from running too lean, which the temp sensor could affect, overly advanced spark timing, or the catalytic converter, which combines CO and NOx to reduce it to nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Running too lean brings up the combustion temperature, which creates more NOx, and at the same time, less CO to reduce it.
