Captain_Kirk, I'm refreshing my memory with my ATSG manual which says;
"delayed or no forward engagement, reverse is OK."
1)fluid level low (guess that you already covered that)
2)Manual linkage is out of adjustment (seen this a lot)
3)Burned forward clutches (yea, marshmallows mmm...)
4)turbine shaft rings worn or damaged (out she comes)
5)cross leak at valve body (easy fix, new ((good used))valve body)
6)forward clutch drum piston stuck (out damned spot)
7)3-4 traction valve stuck (easy fix)
8)loose valve body (tighten it down)
9)pressure regulator valve stuck (easy fix)
So you see you may get off easy. Simply put, if it's a stack (the torque transmission or rotating components) problem she's comin' out. If it's a valve problem, it couldn't be an easier fix. Guess how likely it is that the manual valve is out of adjustment. (hint-VERY). These units had somewhat problematic valve bodies. They are large and complex and I'd sure lift it off and go through it before I'd pull the unit. I used to rebuild these all day and V.B. causes of such disfunction was typical. If you are inclined to pull the V.B. and DIY then e-mail me and I'll try to help. I might have a good V.B.laying around somewhere. Otherwise, have a reliable tranny shop check it out. Good shops can deal with ZFs no problem and should be able to determine whether you need a whole unit (rebuild) or not. Good luck.
