rear brakes

No I am not talking about the SAAB rear disc brakes. Rather this is the BMW rear disc brakes I am talking about. Over the weekend I tried tackling the last item on the 95 525i I am working on nursing it back to its former self. It made me appreciate that much more the elegantly simple design of the SAAB rear disc brakes.
We all know the SAAB rear disc brake caliper has a screw inside which advances with pulling of the hand brake handle. When we service the rear brakes to remove the pads we need to back out the screw to remove them to install new. Changing the rear pads and rotors is no more complicated than the front. The only additional work is backing out the screw on the caliper which squeezes the rear pads.
When I removed the rear rotor of the 95 525i, my memory servicing a 86 325es suddenly comes back to me. What a complicated contraption BMW has! Can you imagine a rear disc brake which also has the complete components of a drum brake? Yes. That's what's on a BMW. The pads on the rotor is actuated by the brake hydarulic. The brake shoes on the drum are actuated by the hand brake cable.
I think a BMW mechanic must be getting more work than his SAAB counterpart by virtue of the design.
