Whenever I use my jack or jackstands, I have a bunch of jacking pads I make from the tread of discarded tires; just cut them up into squares and use them to protect against the sharp edges. Works fine, lasts a long time; guaranteed not to rust, bust, or collect dust. :)
If you want to make some for yourself, you'll find that it's impossible to cut through the rubber and steel belts without a reciprocating saw; that's the only thing that'll work. Muffler cutters, shears, knives, axes, hand grenades, etc, just won't do the job.
Just be sure to trim away any exposed strands from the steel belts at the edges, or you'll get a nasty surprise if you pick them up the wrong way with your bare hands-
