The heat produced is proportional to the work that an engine does (look up Carnot cycle). An idling engine takes much longer to warm up. Besides that, to keep a cold engine running the computer keeps the mixture rich. The extra unburnt gasoline dilutes the oil on the cylinder walls causing more wear. This was even more true before fuel injection. Warming up an engine by leting it idle has always been a bad thing. Simply drive off keeping the rpms under 3000 or so until the temperature gauge is off the peg.
