I'd say that the total condition of the car, what you can afford, what you are willing to pay, and what the selling is willing to accept, are all that matters.
I purchased a 1992 9000CDT Auto new in 1992, 260k miles later I still have it, and it's a great car. Two years ago a purchased another 1992 9000CDT Auto, used with 114k on it, for $2800. It's in good to great shape and had already had a replaced auto as well as other items. Runs great.
But I wanted a 5 speed, and maybe an Aero. Found one in classified right here, New Mexico so no rust, 72k miles, interior looks like the only seat ever used was the drivers, and that very little. Yep, I paid $8K for it. It's in fantastic condition. Needs a couple of little things here and there, but I know if will last me another 150-200K miles. So, divide 200/20= 10 years, 8000/10 is.... $800 a year. Oh, insurance and registration is less too. My insurance is $360 year, but I'm an older driver :)
Sure sure, it helps that I'm a Saab nut and have yet *another* 1992 9000CDT auto (blown auto) parts car, and purchased my very own Tech-2 as well. I'm *still* **way** ahead of the new car curve.
