Actually, chances are pretty good the airbag WON'T go off. Even if you hit something nice and solid at speed.
The airbag system has detected a fault, and the failsafe is to not deploy. The two things that come to mind are a crash sensor at the front or the 'clockspring' in the wheel.
Try this - turn the steering wheel all the way one way, then all the way back the other. Do you hear a 'click' from the steering column? It's not a definitive test, but if you do, chances are the 'clockspring' has broken. That's a spring that looks, well, like a clockspring in the steering column. It carries the signal to the airbag. If it breaks (and they do), the airbag system detects it and lights the light.
Yes, about all you can do is bring it to the dealer. They can read out the codes and at least tell you what's wrong. It may be not too expensive, or it may be breathtaking. At that point, you need to decide how important the airbag is to you.
