New owner of cheap (problematic) '93 9000CS

Introducing myself.. Matt in Fort Collins, CO. I'm new here, and I'm new to Saab.
Yesterday I took delivery of a new to me 1993 Saab 9000cs non turbo, 5 speed (possibly converted from auto). ~150k miles. The car is not running, and has been sitting for 6 months to a year. Battery flat dead, so I havn't tried anything. Previous owner was not very mechanically inclined, but said that it will start but runs very rough... 'sounds like a diesel' he said. But I honestly don't know if he knows what a diesel sounds like.
Anyhow, I'm told possible problem would be the direct injection module. Any thoughts on that from folks that know more? Any other thoughts on that problem or the car in general? I am a competent shade tree mechanic, but most of my experience has been with Volvos and Jaguars. Vintage ones. This Saab is the newest car I've ever owned by 9 years.
The Saab was free, so I don't reckon I can lose too much on it, but I don't want to dump a lot of money into it and still not have it run. As it is, I've got $50 into it for the tow home, and I could surely recover that as is.... the price seemed reasonable.
Thanks in advance for any insights... I know its a bit premature to ask without having even turned it over.
