My 81 VW diesel pickup has something like 596,xxx on it now. And yes we have fixed the odometer the several times it's quit working.
Father bought it in 85 or so with well under 100K. He drove it from OK to LA for years when he was flying for Exxon off a week on a week. I got hold of it when he finally came across a really nice 82(which has never been the truck the 81 has).
It's a little rough looking, but not junk. I spent a few years in FL with it that started it rusting, liveing out west had kept it pretty rust free till about five years ago. It's in rough mechanical shape by my standards right now becuase I'm dumping money into the SAAB, gambling it'll not have a serious failure before I can drive the 9K. Reasoning being it's going to be a big job to get to some of the rust on the truck, light in the double wall steel behind the seats and the front of the bed from the leaking rear glass. But I will fix it. Probibly not the slightly wrincled bed from the rear-ending in TX years and years ago ( picture a VW truck strung between two trees with a come-along and haveing the bed straitened out with large hammers and pulling). It still get's 38mpg, and is in bad need of injectors and probibly a head job.
I learned how to drive in this truck. I can remember sitting on fathers lap on I-95 when I was a little kid going to spend summers with him in OK.
It still smells like home, the seat is permanantly molded to fit father and I, the seating position has probibly helped shape my body as I grew up. I can drive it in my sleep. It's rolling nostalga, a taste of home, and the most steady constant thing ever in my life. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've bought other nicer cars, BMW's, Mercedes diesels, and they were just not my VW. I even drove that 82 father bought with a turbo diesel stuck in it, just was not the 81 I've always called "truck-e".
I can look back at so many photos of loved ones and friends that are gone one way or another, and often there you'll see ole trucke. VW has never made anything finer, and probibly never will to me.
cheers..
