Hello all,

This past Friday, my wife's '92 9kT auto lost a great deal of ATF while parked at a local grocery. Unfortunately, she tried to get it to move for a couple minutes before noticing the large puddle underneath. When she called me I tolde her turn it off and not mess.

After I got it home on Saturday, I discovered a hole(!) in the tranny case betwenn the drain plug and the main housing about .5" in diameter. It looked like it might have blown out from inside, but who knows. The hole was in the flange area where the two main sections of the housing bolt together, maybe 3 inches forward of the drain plug, so there were no moving parts directly behind the hole. I fished around inside with a magnetic wand and fished out what looked to be a broken gear tooth. I also pulled the filter and found some, but not a lot, of shavings on the magnet.

At this point I'm thinking the tranny is dead meat. But, being an optimist, I patched the hole with a good sized wad of JB Weld, set up a worklight under the car pointed at the patch and let it sit overnight.

Sunday morning, I put 3 qts of ATF and a bottle of Lucas No Slip in and carefully wnet through the gear selecter with the brakes on. Topped it off, put it in D, and it rolled right out of the garage. I backed it in and out a couple times, took it around the block and finally on a highway spin. It runs great! No noise, no slipping, no rattling.

I'm cautiously grateful today to the Saab and ZF Gods for smiling on our humble home.

ETS
