Hi all,
Some of you might remember the '97 Aero I posted about a while ago-the one running on three cylinders? After a long and difficult few weeks, I ended up with it. The seller wanted the full price before he would allow me to look at the car. He then refused to answer my calls or emails fro three weeks. Ebay and Paypal were basically useless when it came to resolving the issue. What I learned is that you're pretty much on your own when it comes to resolving a dispute if the seller is non-responsive.
We picked the car up this weekend and my father spent some time messing around with it yesterday (the car is at my parents' house in MA and I'm in NYC). All of what I'm writing is what he reported to me. The good news is that the engine has great compression (180-200+). He was able to clear the check engine light by disconnecting the battery, at which point the car ran great for a few minutes before the CEL returned. There is still a slight misfire at idle which goes away at higher speeds. He swapped DI cassettes and plugs. I'm going to try some NGKs, a new fuel filter and some injector cleaner. I'm also going to get some software to read the stored codes and see if I can figure out what's wrong.
The one major problem that remains is that the second gear synchro ring is apparently worn. I am going to change the transmission oil and see if that helps. I'm thinking I'll use Saab MTF and see if that helps. Is it necessary to use Saab MTF to flush the transmission if you follow Quasi's procedure? I'm loath to use it (at $12.60/quart) unless necessary.
Many thanks to everyone who responded to my earlier posts.
David
