Postmortem: rear seatbelt rubbing roof drain

My right rear seat belt has been sluggish on the return for a couple of years in my '95CSE. A couple of months ago my wife borrowed the car, dropping off my son on the way to work. Son jumped out of the car and slammed the door on the slow to retrieve belt. Wife did not notice the belt hanging out, and when she rounded the corner in to work, it caught a sewer grate and broke.
I bought a used belt from K&N in Ann Arbor, and Yaofeng's and other's input was able to remove and replace the belt. Unfortunately, the belt would not retract. Pull it apart again, and take a closer look, and it is obvious that the seat belt spool is sticking halfway through the pvc drain tube for the moon roof. The tube is acting as a brake on the spool not allowing it to retract.
The drain tube is tight and pressing against the sharp metal edge of the belt spool. There seems to be no way to reposition, so I cut and spliced it a bit of poly tubing with a brass cover. The extra room allowed me to reposition the drain out of the way of the seat belt mechanism.
So this is a heads up to those of you who may be experiencing sluggish return with your rear belts. If I had opened up the c-pillar cover and pulled the original mechanism, I may have found the problem and the fix without breaking the belt. I think this falls in the category of unusual problems!
By the way, I broke both of the 'star' shaped plastic supports on removal, but suspect that they are only there for positioning of the trim on installation. I was able to reinstall 3 clips OK, but broke the 4th. It still seems to hold.
