I agree with 94CS in that its gonna have to do a lot with lubrication and cooling systems. But a lot also just in the disign and manufacture. I guess lube and cooling would have to do with design, but there are other aspects for sure...
ALso though, the quality of the metal used. Quality of construction (tolerances), and whether the engine is designed to run at high RPMs or lower.
Probably the biggest issue has to do with who owns said engine... how they drive. How well they maintain it. Oil changes and the like.
Case in point that I am familiar with... the Volvo OHV B18 and B20 engines of the '60s and early '70s. Pretty good motor that can last a couple hundred thousand miles with proper maintenance. More if meticulous maintenance. In '76 they introduced the B21 engines (later B23, B230etc...), which is basically the same old B20 engine, but with an aluminum overhead cam head, and the engine is now slanted. They improved the oiling system. Those later engines easily go for 250-500k miles with average maintenance. I've seen them with over 800k that have never been apart... Just a better design. Also more boring to drive, so they get driven more conservatively I expect...
