Fuel pump replaced, now check engine lamp on

Hiya guys, still working on replacing my CSE after the engine blew...
I've found a car which might do, but the owner said the fuel pump died and since he replaced it,although car starts and drives well, the check engine lamp has been permanently lit.
Two questions:
a) Does this make sense (I don't want to buy a serious problem!)
b) If it does and it's therefore not too sinister, is there a cunning trick to turn the lamp off? I don't have access to a Tech 11 device to talk to the ECU, so hoping someone knows a trick along the lines of "temporarily short pin x to piny on the ECU connector" or something similar.
My assumption is that if the lamp was lit due to the original fuel pump problem, then following the replacement of the pump, the ECU needs to be told "yes we know, turn the lamp off" using a tech 11 thingy. Is this a fair assumption or should I walk away?
