you could do what the PO of my car did - just bust off the clip that holds the fitting in the tank piece. then, when you smell an extremely strong gasoline smell, pull over and fix it.
well actually, he busted it off. I smelled it and had to fix it. 2 days after i bought the car. there was a trail of gas going back to where it popped out, probably 3 or 4 gallons of gas. (fuel pump flow test anyone?)
fortunately, no pretty ball of flame. fortunately, was 4 miles from my house. (was helping a friend move in NYC the day before) fortunately, a section of heater hose cabletied to the fitting bears against the cover and keeps the fitting from popping out. fortunately, the stink of gas went away after 3 weeks.
break the fitting if you like - you can get new ones. but DON'T break the clips that hold the fittings in. or if you do, don't trust gravity to keep them in place. that little oval piece isn't cheap, from what i can find.
