I said a bunch of bad words when I first pulled the air filter from the box on the 9K. I'd therefore like to remove that big plastic box.
Pokeing around at advance auto today I found a puralator filter part# A34486 which is I believe for about a 90 Honda Prelude, It's roughly 6 inches long and 5 inches diameter with a plastic flange with an OD of 2-7/8ths(close enough to 3". Looking underhood I think this will fit through that hole to the inner fender. I think I can cobble a couple of couplings for the AFM and the filter and a piece of PVC or light steel pipe to get the length. Only question is, that dumps the filter ahead of the front tire with the plastic fender liner seperating them, concieled from the front by the bumper because it's up there a bit, but still open to the ground. I searched and found this pic here..

Mine looks just like that, am I missing some sort of cover or trim or something that closes off that space from the bottem? I'm mildly concerned about water slogging the filter and road debris. I can construct a shield I think, but it just does not look like the 9K should be doing any stream fording in any case.
I like the readily available filter because I don't trust any aftermarket filter anymore on anything other than a race car, K&N or otherwise. I just replace stock stuff pretty regularly. I'm also not super concerned with performance right now, and it can't flow all that bad with a filter that size can it?
