speedometer seems inaccurate; differential gear ratios

Getting into nit-picky stuff now that my 9k seems to be working well...
I'm very experienced at judging the speed at which I'm driving having driven cars all my life with in-accurate or non-working speedometers. I've never had a speeding ticket.
Usually though, when I'm in a newer car (a '93 Saab is newer to me), I'll be driving what seems right and look down to find I'm doing 5-10 over the limit. In the Saab, it's opposite... I'll look down and the speedometer shows I'm going 5 under.... I think the speedometer is off. Even in school zones, I go an indicated 15mph in the 20 zone, and I'm right with other traffic... nobody is catching or running away...
This car has a 5 speed, but originally was an automatic... could there be a different differential gear ratio involved here? Is the speedometer senced off the transmission? Or a wheel sensor somewhere? The odometer seems spot on having driven known distances... just the speedo seems off.
Largely just curious. It's not a problem I plan to address...
thanks,
Matt
Oh... an just for the hell of it, pictured is the 'new' 'free' Saab taken last Friday on a *COLD* morning before going to work... I've now got $738 into it including a new windshield, two new tires, and some other bits...
