thanks for reading...
from what the mech described, he was afraid if he hit one of the lines into the ABS removing the trans, that it would break. he also said the lines were bad towards the rear. i'm assuming they rusted.
this mech is very thorough and the prior owner had it serviced there regularly, i got the car with thousands in recent parts/repairs four years ago.
he said replacing the lines was difficult and expensive and didn't recommend it due to the unknown condition of the engine due to frozen expansion tank (engine is running fine, though sounds a bit like a diesel as it has since I got it)...
i think that if the expansion tank was ok, he would have offered me an estimate to fix brake lines, which would probably have brought repair cost to more than the car's replacement value.
for him not to offer me an estimate to fix, suggests he really doesn't think it's worth fixing, which means something to me, because he's not afraid to replace parts (as evidenced by prior owner's receipts up to 193K when I got the car).
if i don't fix it, i have to keep insuring it until some point at which i can fix the issues and take a chance with the engine. it's a no win situation. It's not easy parting with a good saab - that one never let me down.
