A black one will work, but it is not recommended. There are folks that have used them and seem quite happy.
The DI not only drives the spark, but has circuitry to detect ignition and more importantly, pre-ignition (pre-knock). The circuitry is different between red and black. Black isn't 'better' - it's just different. The difference is to work with changes in the ECU of the 9-3 and 9-5, which is very different from the ECU in the 9000.
So the 9000 ECU will be getting somewhat different signals than it expects. I don't know of anyone that has done an in-depth analysis, but I expect that if your engine is running just fine, the signals are pretty much the same. Where it (may) go wrong is if your engine starts to mess up - if you start to get knock. The DI may, or may not, detect it properly. That would be very, very bad.
I can say this for sure - Saab says not to do it. OK, they may feel they make more money this way. John Moss, the head Saab Tech that runs the technician training school, doesn't recommend it. Yes, he works for Saab, but he has no direct financial gain in selling more red than black DIs. And he's quick to show you a cheaper way out.
The DI is a critical part of the car. It stops working, so does the car. It can also damage the car (misfires kill catalytic convertors, knock punches holes in pistons). Yes, it doesn't make me happy to spend more for the DI, but sometimes you need to get the right part.
