the car while the pump is filling the tank, and the majority of these fires happen to women. Most large gas stations have cameras and they have recorded a lot of these fires. If you pump your own gas, don't get back in the car to stay warm. Usually when you first get out to fill up you touch the gas door, which discharges any static elec. True this could cause a fire, but it is very unlikely. The biggest risk is when there are many gasoline fumes, i.e. when filling the tank. So what happens is the person gets out of the car, builds up a charge from the seat, and goes to remove the nozzle, the tiny discharge is enough to ignite the fumes around the car. This happens more often in winter with the dryer air, and the wearing of heavy wool coats and or sweaters, and more often to women, as they are more likely to go back and sit in the car to stay warm.
