The bottom of the pump presses on the floor of the tank. You'll notice that the pump (hard to do when it's installed), has some spring metal between the pump body and the top plate. When you put it in, the top plate actually sits a little above the tank. When you screw the collar down, it compresses the top plate.
As yaofeng says, there is an alignment mark on the top plate of the pump that lines up with a mark on the top of the tank. Facing the back of the car, I think the mark is just about straight left. That's the direction (passenger side, US) that the fuel sender goes.
I'd doubt you hear a rattle from a tank filled with liquid. I would check to make sure that the metal plate that goes over the pump is secured, that the electrical connector isn't banging into it, that the wooden/fabric cover isn't loose, and that you didn't leave a socket rolling around on the top of the tank.
