Good post Bill. I was curious as to the US Gov't standards so I headed over to fueleconomy.gov and got the following figures:
9000 Turbo Manual(Premium fuel, B234R engine) = 21 City, 27 Highway
9000 Turbo Auto (Regular fuel, B234R engine) = 18 City, 26 Highway
I have a 98 Auto (104k) and am getting slighly better then these figures, so I figure I'm doing something right. I have always been able to best the numbers by a MPG or two.
Interesting is how they tested the manual with premium fuel (91 octane), while the automatic due to its lower output gets tested with regular fuel (87 octane).
In my cars that didn't "require" premium (i.e. not specified in the manual) I have always been able to get better mileage on the lower grade fuel.
