I've done a few SAAB/Clarion radio replacements on '91 and '92 9KTs with Alpine AM/FM/CD player head units, and they've worked very well. I'm not sure about wiring harnesses that are compatible, but as good as the stock Clarion units are, almost any new head unit is a nice improvement over it. It is fairly easy to connect the wires from the harness supplied with a new head unit to the corresponding (though different color-coded) wires that run to the front speakers (brown&green and red&blue) and to the amp. under the front passenger seat which powers the rear speakers. As far as I know, it is extremely difficult or impossible to adapt the stock amp. to a new head unit: I've given it a good effort and still couldn't understand it.
What I usually do is upgrade the speakers and head unit at the same time and purchase a decent 2 channel amp. to power the rear speakers from one of the head unit's pre-out connections. For my most recent installation I took a $250 Alpine AM/FM/CD/CDR/CDRW/MP3/WMA headunit that I got for $120 new on ebay, $250 Alpine 2X90watt amp for $50 in EC on ebay which I use to power 2 $200 Alpine 6.5" SPS 100 Type S rear speakers I got for $80 new on ebay and finally 2 $150 Alpine 4" front speakers I got for $50 new on ebay which I power using the head unit's internal 4X50watt amp. bridged to 2X100watts to provide more power and better sound, utilizing the speakers increased capabilities. All you need then is a wiring kit which should include large gauge positive and negative battery leads, speaker wire +/- 12gauge, etc..
I have incredible sound quality at a very low price considering what I could have paid for these items. Go to Crutchfield and see what speakers fit your car and your taste and wind them on ebay for less. I hope this was help in some way, let me know if you need anymore help of have anymore questions.
