this may be a rumor but...
I hear, back when I started using synthetic oil, that you were supposed to use the petroleum oil for about 1000-2000 miles and then change to synth. Reason, supposedly, was that synth was too slippery and rings and other wear to seat items would not get done properly.
Call me superstious, but I did just that on my last four cars. results have been no internal failures or repairs (save a couple of head gaskets due to overheating caused by failed thermostat) on: 1) 1987 900S with 360,000, 2) 1992 9000CDT with 260,000, 3) 1979 Toyota Supra (first year) with 105,000 when traded in for 4) 1985 900T with 190,000 when traded in for the 9000CDT above.
I have seven saabs on the road now, mobil-1 across the board. And, Yes, I drove the new ones under 3,000 rpm for the first 1,000 miles each. and it nearly *killed* me!
