the check engine text flashes if you turn the car on (red lights on dash, don't start it) and wait a few seconds. you'll get 1 long flash, then a pause, then a number of flashes that indicates the problem area.

this is a paste from a previous post, apologies to the author for losing info about who to credit.

Diagnostic trouble codes can be read off via the CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) after the lamp test performed when the ignition is switched on. Reading of the lamp flash codes can be repeated until the diagnostic trouble code memory has been cleared. The DTC memory is normally cleared by means of the Scan Tool but in an emergency it can be cleared by unplugging the Trionic control module connector for at least 5 minutes. Note that the control module will then lose all adapted values.

Obtain readouts of diagnostic trouble codes as follows:
1.Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2.Then turn it to the ON position. 3 The CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) should
· light up and stay on for about 3 seconds
· Go out for about 3 seconds
· light up and stay on for about 3 seconds
· Go out for about 2 seconds
The last on/off sequence (3s/2s) is a warning that the lamp flash code is about to appear.
4.The lamp flash code consists of a number of brief flashes having a duration of 0.4 seconds. The CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) goes out for 2 seconds between each new lamp flash code (if there is more than one fault).
5.After the last lamp flash code, the malfunction indicator lamp goes out for 3 seconds before lighting up again for 3 seconds, after which the lamp flash codes are repeated once again. DTC readout continues in this way as many times as you wish.

Codes:
2-MAP sensor
3-Intake air temperature sensor
4-Coolant temperature sensor
5-Throttle position sensor
6-Oxygen sensor
7-Adaptation
8-EVAP canister purge valve
9-Control module, internal fault
