I am replacing a head gasket and installing a new timing chain on my '91 9kt and need some guidance on the timing chain replacement. The Haynes manual states that the bright link on the timing chain and the notch on the lower gear must line up. These are currently not in line with one another and I wanted to roll the chain in rather than remove the BS chain and gears. It would seem simpler. the Saab engine manual shows a picture with the link and notch lined up, but doesn't state that this is necessary.
Anyway, I have found the master link on the old chain and would like to remove it and roll in the new chain. What are the consequences of replacing the chain in its current position with the master link not in line with the notch on the crank?
BTW, I replaced all of the timing and balance shaft guides, gears and chains rougnly 40k ago. I am only doing the chain this go around while I am replacing the head gasket.
Thanks in advance,
Dan
