Look at the link below. It's a write-up I followed to make an engine support beam. I did exactly like on picture. Now, there is a space to the right of the engine(drivers side). That's where tranny is. My ratchet strap was with the eye hook which I attached to the tranny, then I lapped the strap over the beam. Using a ratchet I lifted and lowered tranny as needed.
I suggest you to use Quasimotors write up on the clutch job- excellent info!
You do need to completely remove tranny for couple of reasons: to be able freely remove clutch assembly and flywheel (if resurfacing is needed), also to change slave cylinder. Believe me, completely removing tranny will save you time, your hands, fingers and... vocabulary for a better day:).
