Once you've got the fuel line off the barb, remove the plastic strainer from the bottom of the pump insert. You'll have to first remove the rubber "sock" that the upper part of the pump insert passes through. It's going to be tough because the rubber will have hardened over the years of exposure to gasoline. Just take your time and take care not to tear it.
After that, the plastic strainer just slides off the pump insert. A couple squirts (not too much) of WD-40 will help here because there's an o-ring around the pump body, and it too gets kinda stuck to the pump over time. Once you get it free, it should slide off with a little effort.
Reverse on assembly, of course. You can do worse than taking pictures of everything BEFORE disassembling them so that you know how they go back together with the new insert.
Take it from me, remember to remove the protective plastic shipping cap from the intake on the new insert BEFORE you put everything together!
If you mangled the nylon fuel line connected to the insert, toss it and replace with good quality fuel line from the local store (not the Pep Boys crap, but good quality foreign stuff). Use STAINLESS STEEL hose clamps ONLY! Again, not available at Pep Boys (I hate Pep Boys) but here's a hint: try your local Sears, in the plumbing department.
That rubber "sock" is going to be a challenge to reinstall, and if you're even the least in doubt about any of the fuel lines in the assembly, replace them.
Finally, it's also a good idea to replace the o-rings on the fuel line elbows that connect the car to the pump assembly.
