Transmission on my 86 9kt has broken (occasionally locks up, making clutch stink, sometimes clunks when clutch engages or, won't engage without a lot of fiddling).

I've had this tranny out twice before (clutch, slave) over five years ago. Took it out downwards after removing driver's side subframe. No big deal, certainly didn't need the helper Haynes claims is indispensable.

Shortly thereafter saw a post by "Big Tim", who apparently pulled his transmission out upwards. This method might have a smaller hassle factor than what I did.

So, I had a look in the engine compartment. Upward removal appears to be quite doable after a few things are removed - battery tray, air cleaner, intercooler to manifold pipe, air mass meter, perhaps something else. And, the starter, of course (which I've just overhauled).

Anyone have an opinion on this?
