Classic bad transistor Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: a/c fan on high only, instrument panel diodes, PeterS., Thu, 2 Mar 2006 20:12:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The classic sign of a blown blower motor transistor is the fan stuck on high with an ACC system. A transistor that is actually visually damaged is quite rare. When they usually die, they don't have the same violence as your previous failure. If you start blowing transistors frequently, it may be the sign of a blower motor pulling excessive current.
The diodes in the instrument panel are nothing special. With the exception of certain voltage-regulating diodes, about the only critical parameter is power dissipation. And bigger doesn't hurt - only if it won't fit. Get yourself down to the local Radio Shack, and find some rectifying diodes that look like they will fit. A quick check of the RS website shows a 1N4001 or 1N4003 would be fine - easily handle an amp. If they're too big, you should be able to get away with the 1N914. They can only handle 75ma, so I'd go with the 4001/3 if they fit.
