That 9-5 post talks about the front sensor which is crucial to fuel mixture adjustments.
The rear sensor is mostly on most cars used to monitor the quality/working order of the catalytic converter.
If the rear sensor would be bad on a 96 and up OBD2 car you would get a check engine light coming on indicating a catalytic converter fault.
