make a tester (long)- I had this problem Posted by henry helfman [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: No start mystery (long), GaryJ, Mon, 6 Mar 2006 11:09:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
On my '87 9kt years ago. I agree with Gary. It sounds hall-effect or module. In my case both failed shortly after each other with similar symptoms. Car would start and run fine when cold but at temp it would randomly stall and not start until cool.
Drivability problems like this are a real pain to diagnose because by the time you are ready to investigate, it stops acting up (like that singing frog in old cartoons)
I made a quick cheap ignition tester and was able to finally catch the problem. Took an old spark plug (any spark plug-even a lawnmower) ziptied the plug housing tight to the batery neg terminal. (make sure you can see the plug gap through the windsheild when sitting in the driver's seat) Then took a spare plug wire (again, any old plug wire will do) to the plug terminal with the other end propped up near the distributor. As soon as it's NOT starting or stalling, pop the hood, pull off a wire from the distributor and install your spare test lead. Crank and check for spark through the windshield. Of course if you have a helper this is much easier.
In my case when it wasn't starting it was clearly not makeing spark. Quickly swapped with a test module and it started (on 3 cylinders) BINGO
Later the hall sensor was failing I remember that at temp the engine would cut and violently return when driving as well as not start. There were obvious anomolies with the tach needle but that little ignition tester came in handy then too. Kept it on the car for years which always raised eyebrows but eventually helped again when my FPR went bad and caused a fuel-related no start condition. I'd recommend this to anybody handy with a distributor'd 9000.
Hope that helps
Henry
