It happened for the second time tonight. Driving home from work, some 27 miles, after clearing a stop sign, I noticed that if I relaxed my hold on the steering wheel, it wobbled strongly and drifted slightly to the left. The behavior was noticeable as slow as 15 mph, but becomes strong by 45 mph. (I didn't want to go any faster.) Accelerating or braking smoothed it out. Only while speed was nearly steady-state did it shake.

History: In the summer of '05, I replaced both lower ball joints, both tie rod ends, and both rear lower control arm bushings. Then had it aligned, then put new tires on the front. Front end felt great. Some 6 months after that, maybe December '05, the above behavior occurred while I was driving over 70 mph. That was frightening. I slowed to 40 or so and left the freeway ASAP. The behavior had cleared by the time I got home. At that time, my best guess was that a glob of snow had positioned itself inside the wheel, causing a great unbalance. Following that time, I had an expert Saab indie check the front end for any looseness there may be and he said it was all fine.

Then it happened again tonight, Mar '06. Putting the car on jack stands, I see no wobble anywhere, EXCEPT: when an assistant holds the steering wheel still and I wobble the front tires as if to steer them, there is about 3/16 of an inch play (in & out) of the shafts that go into the steering gear.

Is this a problem? Other guesses welcome.
Thanks in advance.
