As Dan indicated, the shock consists of both a damper and a spring. If you pull the shock apart, you will be able to see the spring. However, I'm not sure if I'd trust the shock afterwards.
Because of the damper, the harder (and therefor faster) you push the shock to compress it, the more it resists you. I've never run into a tensioner really hard to compress, much less two. The trick on compression is not to press hard - instead, apply a steady force with patience. When the tensioner is installed and I want to compress it, I'll stick a breaker bar on from above, and apply maybe 10-20 pounds of force on the end, pressing it towards the firewall. Typically I'll be applying this force for 30 seconds or more.
If indeed the shocks are stuck, it most likley isn't the spring but the damper, which I don't think is repairable.
