Both problems may be connected - vacuum? Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: HELP!!! My brakes are demonized too!!!, Mikee, Wed, 8 Mar 2006 15:35:50 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If there is an air leak in the intake manifold, it will cause idle surging and may also cause brake boost issues due to the lack of proper vacuum (which powers the brake booster). The first thing that I would do is inspect all the vacuum lines, or better yet, just replace all of them - ten year old rubber lines that have been sitting in a very hot, oily place will certainly develop cracks/leaks. I used 3.5mm silicone hose from hosetechniques.com, but any rubber vacuum hose should work - I believe that 5/32 inch is the correct generic size, ten feet should be adequate for your car which does not have Traction Control System (TCS). Be sure to get vacuum hose, not the thin-wall washer fluid hose. Replace the hoses one at a time so you have no opportunity to make incorrect connections.
For the one short run that starts at a three-way plastic connector behind the throttle body and disappears into the firewall (which goes to the boost gauge), you will have to take the long cover under the windshield off to get to the other connection - if you don't want to do this, cut an inch or two off of the existing hose so there is a fresher piece of hose to connect to (but replace it eventually!).
