Stereo died, help?

I've got a 94 9000 cd, and the stereo cut out a few weeks ago and hasn't come back on. I've checked all the fuses (even the hidden ones) and they all seem fine.
Here's the issue:
The radio comes on, and you can just barely hear it if you turn the volume all the way up. The cd player doesn't seem to work though, it only makes a faint clicking sound instead of music. If I hit an equalizer button, it maked a loud, amplified pop sound for a split second, then goes back to the very faint sound. I replaced the radio head with another one, and the same thing happens. So this leaves me with either the amp under the seat, the cd player/equalizer, or the wriring. Does anyone know whether the amp is for only the back speakers? If that's the case, then it could be the cd unit. Someone said somewhere that it can be bypassed with a plug. Does anyone know any details on that? Does anyone have any suggestions? I've got my dash and passenger seat all torn up now, but still no solutions.
