automatic, but pertains to standard as well...
after spending too much time trying to get top starter bolt off, took aldo's suggestion and removed throttle body. getting combination wrench on was difficult due to position of nut, but eventually, using a slightly larger size 18mm I think rather than 17mm, it came loose...
getting bolts out of torque converter seemed impossible they were so tight...
removing intake manifold's two sections (10 minute job) made those bolts highly accessible with air wrench and extensions and off they came.
removal of intake manifold also made it very easy to get the top nut on the starter and get a socket wrench with extension on it.
to anyone wanting to remove transmission, i highly recommend removal of intake manifold/throttle body. you can clean throttle body and tighten up hose clamps on intake manifold while you are at it and potentially save over an hours worth of frustration trying to get at starter.
also, motorcyle jack from pep boys worked great for transmission raise and lower!
took opportunity to replace worn trans mount and rear control arm bushing and sway bar link
