Dash lights - Intermittent...

I'm having problems with my dash lights (the acc button lights, speedo lights etc but not ecu disp or trip comp)- initally they were turning on and off randomly. This appeared to be a loosed connection... i slapped various areas of the dash to try and locate the likely problem, and found that the area near the bottom of the glove box and the center console made the lights come on and off most easily. Unfortunatly i now cannot get them to come back on!
So far i have:
- looked at any wiring in the center console itself (ie pulled radio out) but nothing obviously wrong.
- Checked all the fuses
- Checked the earthing point under the speaker. This looked clean, i pulled all the wires about - but no change on the lights.
- Previously i had the trip computer out and bypassed the light sensor in that so lights were on full brightness all the time. I don't think this is the problem as it's been running fine like that for ages, and the ECU display under the speedo remains illuminated even when the other lights have gone off.
Other observations:
- i have an intermitent error off the speed signal wire (from the trip computer) so that my satnav goes crazy occasionally. Not sure if this is linked or a separate problem.
- Slapping the dash near the fuse/relays used to make a difference - are the dash lights on a relay?! - from the diagrams i found it didn't look like it but it would seem like a likely candidate?
I'm running out of ideas ...your suggestions are needed!
Thanks in advance for your help - Dave
