Gary in T., When the forward clutch accumulator fails it will cause harsh engagement of the forward clutch. The clutch will apply quickly but with a bang and away you go. This is often caused by a broken spring under the accumulator piston and also causes the transmission to bang its' downshift from fourth to third. If you have delayed or no engagement in drive there are some other valves in the valve body to look at (4-3 traction or 3-4 traction valves). Does it go in reverse and what happens if you try to take off with the shift lever in "1"? Removing the valve body entails removing the battery and its' tray and the transmission top cover. Then unscrew the larger of the torx head screws, there's 11 of them and they are T-27. Then lift off the valve body. Don't let any dirt or tools or anything fall down in the transmission. Lay a clean towel where the valve bady was and replace the top cover while the valve body is out. Delay or loss of forward drive is also caused by a spent forward clutch or a variety of defective sealing (piston type) rings. If she goes fine in "1" but not "D" then the low roller (one way) clutch is broken (pretty common). Of course the most common cause of loss of drive or lagging engagement is low fluid level. Another very common ZF4HP18 problem is broken govenor rings but that causes eratic shifts, not delayed 1st gear engagement. Good luck.
