It would be good to know the year, because that points at the number of belts. And do you have ACC or manual temp controls?
If you have ACC, the outside temp is above freezing, and you are not in ECON, then yes, the AC does cycle on and off periodically, especially if you are in the DEFROST modes. It does this to dry the air. The air is still flowing over the heater core, so you get warm, dry air, instead of warm, wet air, which tends to condense on windshields.
If you have a manual temp controls, then the AC compressor only comes on when you hit the button.
When the AC kicks on, it adds a load on the system. If you have a worn belt, misaligned belt, or worn pulley bearings, this extra load can cause noise. Yes, it could be the compressor. But it could also be pulleys or belts.
Assuming you have a newer car with a single serpentine belt, how many miles do you have on the tensioner and idler pulleys? I like to replace them every 60K miles - they usually last 75K, but not much more.
