New or rebuilt compressors are usually shipped with a block-off plate on the intake and exhaust if it has a pad mount (which your 1992 compressor has) or caps on the hose fittings if you don't. This means that when you turn the shaft--I am assuming that you are turning the shaft and not the pulley on the clutch--the compressor is creating a partial vacuum in the small space left in the intake manifold. That vacuum would make it difficult to turn the shaft freely.
Compressors are usually shipped with enough oil to lubricate the parts but without a full charge of compressor oil. The typical procudure is to fully drain the compressor of any residual oil (there is a plug on top of this model compressor for adding and removing oil), then fill it with the correct type and quantity of oil.
Are you doing this yourself, or are you getting and indy to put on the compressor? The reason I ask, is there a number of important things to do, like put on a new receiver/dryer, flush the condensor, evacuate the system with a vacuum pump, etc., that should be done if you want the replacement to be successful.
