...this was to make the old reliable workhorse engine fit within the engine bay of the then-new NG900.
Block was shortened by reducing the space devoted to the timing and balance shaft chains -- so the arrangement of the cam gears would be different I believe.
I may be wrong about the valve cover and exactly WHAT they did when they shortened the engine. I am surprised the bolt holes line up; I expected the later valve cover to be too short for the older head.
I would be concerned about the location in the valve cover of the upper chain guide -- if the later engines had different placement of the timing chain that would be a problem. Perhaps a call to your local dealer would answer this question once and for all.
I am wrong or misinformed myself a lot of the time, so maybe this is one. It would be good to know if later valve covers can work on earlier engines!
