Air in my fuel line???

I've an '86 9000T that started acting badly. It might idler ok sometimes, but when I put my foot on the gas, it sputters and dies. Needly to say there is no power and it is undrivable. I took off the fuel filter and jumped fuse 14 to 22 and had a glass jar catching fuel. It comes out rather airy. Just like the aerator on a kitchen faucet. The stream is also not steady, but randomly choppy. I wouldn't think that the air is normal, and I'm sure the stream shouldn't be choppy... Anyone have any ideas aside from fuel pump (for the choppiness)?
Thanks!
Andrew
