Thanks for the insight Ari-

1. When I finished the job, the battery light was on very bright. I had noticed it came on when all these problems started.

2. The bare green wire looked like it had fried recently, as the wire still looked shiny, and not corroded.

I was warming up my car for about 5 minutes, when I came back out of the house, and it was idling extremely rough. There was exhaust everywhere. I got inside to rev it up and all the electrical died and the engine killed. I jumpstarted it and it died immediately after taking the cable off. I jumped it again and it charged for a while, and I got about 6 blocks before it died at a stop sign.

(I might interject here that I have a dying blower motor that I manually turn on and off through the fuse box- could this have fried something?)

It was late and I was out of town, so I thought a battery might be the best way to get the car off the road and back to my friends house. I then took it to autozone, and their tester said the alternator was only putting out 12 volts, so they said it was shot. Bought a new alternator and installed it.

Fast forward- I had to have it towed, and I thought the best place to tow it is a saab specialist in Portland. They gave it a look over and said the new alternator is "clocked" or "phased" wrong. They said the little bolt (that holds the green wire) is touching a grounded part. When I put it in, I did notice it was closer to the passenger headlight than the one I removed, and it was close to a bracket, but seemed like there was some gap there.

I am thinking about ordering a new alternator, getting a refund for the one I just installed, and having them professionally install it and re-splice the green wire.

Is this a logical next step? I would try to save and do it myself, but it is broken down out of town, and I can't miss any more work.
