It sounds like you may not have gotten the silver keeper out of the antenna. look at your new one, there is a silver piece that is about the size of the top portion of a ball point pen (the kind you can open and put in a refill). You should have removed a piece just like that from the antenna when getting out the old mast. if you didn't it's still in there. clean the opening up and get a flashlight and look for a silver/chrome thing. the antenna unit itself only has a copper or gold color in there. get some good needle nose pliers and get that bad boy out.
only that is out the new mast should slide right in. if, after you cycle power on and off about 5 times of so, it doesn't completely retract, it means a piece of the old antenna is still in the whole. you have to take the antenna out, there is a small nut right in the middle of the circle where the antenna winds in. be cautious, the damn things fly! unscrew the nut, remove the cover, it's pretty obvious and you will see a length of the white plastic notched tail in there. remove/replace/ and refit the antenna. AFTER the antenna does a complete takeup you put the silver goodie in. it keeps the antenna from pushing completely out of the opening. then replace the rubber footed saab logoed isolater and screw on the collar nut onto the antenna, test again... then smile, you just saved about 85$ on labor.
