The solution: (Which was suggested to me by Corey at Carriage House Performance in Rochester, NY - great garage, check it out if you need service)
Turn the key to "On" and the radio also "On", but the engine should not be running.
Drain the Battery (I left on the headlights, cabin lights, and the radio for four hours).
After the battery is totally drained (no turn-over), get a jump and run idle for at least 30 mins. to charge the battery.
-- At this point Corey suggested putting in the code, but, not wanting to have to deal the the whole fiasco again, I did the following --
When I got the car jumped and the radio came on, it displayed "----".
I had the radio on with the car on for atleast an hour while the radio displayed "----". I did turn the car off during the elapsing of this one hour interval, but I made sure to accumulate at least one hour of radio on with car on time.
I then pushed and held the "BAND" key to display "COdE In" on the display. Ever the cautious type, I let another hour of radio on time while car on time accumulate.
This morning when I went out to the car (after saying a little prayer that the radio would please God work), I turn the key to "On" without starting the Engine, and checked the radio. It still had "CodE In" on the display, so I put in my four digit coded, and wha-zzam! As soon as I had put in the last digit of my code, the clock showed up on the radio display, and then the default 88.90 fm came through the speakers in glorious static that was perhaps one of the most beautiful sounds I had heard that morning.
I clicked off the radio, and drove to work to the sound of my own "wahoo!"s.
