I score petrolatium from work, a fancier name for industrial strength vaseline. But that is what is speced on gas turbines. Honetly I think it is the same stuff as over the counter.
now on the cams. Not much oil is left on shut down on the cams and in the caps... but you are right it doesn't hurt.
if the oil is purged from the followers on assembly the engine will make the nastiest racket depending on how much air has entered;-)
