Are you single or married? Kids or no kids?
Only car or second car?
How often do you use the hatchback storage/utility?
if the dealer is low-balling you on the aero, dealer is probably overcharging on the convertible (unless you're getting a certified warranty)...
two ideas:
1. sell the aero on this site or locally in your paper and then search for a convertible for sale by owner on this site or locally and save money on both ends...
2. if the dealer is giving you very little for the aero, consider keeping the aero for awhile, lower the insurance to occasional driver status (or just park it in driveway and drop collision for awhile)....
then you can decide whether to sell it, or keep it, after you've lived with the convertible for a month or two.
consider whether you can afford to keep both.
the aero is getting older and insurance should be getting more reasonable.
OR, consider keeping the aero and getting an entirely different car (non-saab) as a convertible, cheaper than the 2003 9-3.
do you want a daily driver?? convertibles can be loud, can leak, i've had one for nearly 20 years, and i love it, but as a regular daily driver all-purpose vehicle, it's nice to have the hatchback.
for awhile my wife and i both had convertibles, and we wound up getting a subaru wagon and selling her bmmw 325iC, imagine that!!
then i got tired of driving my 442 conv as a daily and was missing my 900S i had sold a couple years prior, so I got a 9000, and then she got a 9000 and we sold the subaru...
then we got another 9000, and recently departed the prior two 9000s...
now i'm dreaming of 9-5 aero wagons....
having a big solid safe quiet comfortable luxurious fun practical car is a nice thing...
and while i've always thought cars that weren't convertibles were missing something vital, i have come to appreciate solid quiet cars with sunroofs, especially in city traffic.
where do you live, what kind of roads do you typically drive on?
I think if your heart is drawing you to the 9-3, I'd buy it but keep your Aero for awhile until you're sure. Save you the trouble if the 9-3 loses it's appeal in 6 months, and keeps you from feeling like you gave it away to the dealer.
good luck,
aaron
